How to Read a Federal Retirement Estimate

Begin with the assumptions: service history, high-three salary, sick leave, retirement type, and date. An estimate is only as useful as the inputs behind it.

Next, separate gross annuity from the amount you expect to receive after deductions. Taxes, insurance premiums, and survivor elections can materially change take-home income.
